When we sleep, our bodies remain relatively still for hours, causing fascia to tighten and joints to feel stiff. A quick mobility routine acts like WD-40 for your joints, increasing blood flow and sending a gentle wake-up signal to your nervous system.
Don't push into pain. Morning mobility should feel delicious and relieving. Move slowly and let your breath guide the range of motion.
Perform each movement slowly for 1 minute.
Start on all fours. Inhale as you drop your belly towards the floor and look up (cow). Exhale as you round your spine toward the ceiling and tuck your chin (cat). This hydrates your spinal discs.
Start in a plank position. Step your right foot to the outside of your right hand. Reach your right arm up to the ceiling, twisting your torso. Hold for a second, return hand to the floor, step back to plank, and repeat on the left side.
Drop your hips down into a deep squat. Keep your heels on the ground (widen your stance if needed). Press your elbows into your knees to open your hips. Breathe deeply.
Stand up. Slowly roll your shoulders backward for 30 seconds. Then gently drop your right ear to your right shoulder, roll your chin to your chest, and bring your left ear to your left shoulder.
The key to this routine is consistency. Try doing it immediately after you get out of bed or while your coffee is brewing.
